For most of history, man has had to fight nature to survive.
In this century he is beginning to realize that, in order to survive, he must protect it.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau

1910-1997, French Oceanographer

With respect for nature

These words of Jacques Yves Cousteau constituted for us Intertan S.A. source of inspiration for the creation of the series of disposable bio products with absolute respect for nature, knowing that human life without nature has no chance of continuity, but even more, that the quality of human life is determined by the quality of nature.

Our fourth-generation company Intertan S.A. presents TESSERA Bio Products® with the ambition to protect the environment as a minimum contribution to the global effort to save the planet. Intertan S.A. is the first Greek company to create its own complete line of disposable organic products.

But why TESSERA?

  • TESSERA is the Greek word for the number 4 (FOUR).
  • Nature is derived from the Latin word natura, which was a Latin translation of the Greek word physis that means growth, development, progress. Nature consists of 4 dynamic elements, water, fire, earth and air! From their interactions and mixtures all the objects of the Universe – tangibles and intangibles, visible and invisible – are created.
  • The number 4 symbolizes the basis of life. From Biology we know that DNA consists of 4 bases: Cytosine – Guanine, Thymine – Adenine.
  • FOUR are the fundamental forces in physics, FOUR are the basic states of matter.
  • FOUR are the seasons of the year, FOUR are the basic mathematical operations, FOUR are the points of the horizon. We, humans perceive nature as four-dimensional.

FOUR is the number of the earth!

It represents the perfection and harmony that characterize the earth. It symbolizes stability, order, integrity, and wholeness.

FOUR are the dynamic elements of earth, WATER, FIRE, EARTH, and AIR!

The FOUR elements we want to safeguard in the coming years.

These are the reasons why we chose “TESSERA” as a name for our bio friendly products, with minimal environmental footprint.

Products from natural materials, compostable, recyclable, biodegradable and reusable, that return us to the natural way of life of our ancestors.

#make_the_difference

Recyclables

Products that can be “reborn” and assist in the reduction of CO2 emissions.

And yet… the story of recycling begins in the Bronze Age. At that time people used to melt their metallic objects using fire in order to produce new products.

Consequently, recycling remains up until today the process of utilizing already used materials and turning them into raw material for the production of new products. For that reason, recycling reduces the consumption of raw material from natural resources and saves energy thus less greenhouse gases are emitted. Recyclable products, also known as recyclables, are manufactured from paper, glass, various plastic substances (PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS), aluminum etc.

In other words, recycling means rebirth. Not only are products reborn, but so is our planet.

The 25th of November has been set since 2009 as the “Recycling Day”! But let’s not just wait until then. Which simple steps can we follow on a daily basis? First, we can reduce waste by choosing products with small and eco friendly packaging. Moreover, we can look for the recycling logo on the products that we buy, take part in the recycling actions of our municipality and mainly buy recyclable products.

Our TESSERA Bio Products® are 100% recyclable single use and eco friendly products! Paper products without plastic coating, natural products from sugarcane, palm leaves, wood and bamboo that can be recycled and reutilized as raw material, assist in the reduction of the environmental footprint. Choose them!

Biodegradables

Environmentally friendly products that biodegrade without leaving traces of environmental pollution behind.

Where do single use packaging products end up after their content is consumed? They usually end up in landfills for the purpose of incineration or optimally for recycling. Beside the methods mentioned above, we nowadays hear a lot about biodegradation.

Degradability requires the exposure of materials to factors that assist in their chemical breakdown. The breakdown of products, when they end up in the environment, can take many years. The breakdown ratio depends on the composition of the product and the environmental conditions. For instance, aluminum decomposes after 100 – 200 years, plastic decomposes after 450 years, while glass never decomposes! Consequently, plastic products are known for their slow breakdown ratio and low environmental compability.

What is biodegradation and which single use packaging product materials can not only degrade, but also biodegrade?

Biodegradation is the biological degradation, where microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria take action! Those microorganisms produce enzymes, which react easily with natural polymers (starch, cellulose etc.) and as a result they break down the chemical composition of bioplastics or natural products into elements such as CO2, water, salts, trace elements and biomass that do not harm nature.

In that way the product reenters the environment and the process of biodegradation is completed in a natural manner.

Our TESSERA Bio Products® are biodegradable. Choose our single use food packaging products made from paper, wood, bamboo, palm leaves and bioplastics such as PLA and Mater-Bi®, which are made from natural polymers like corn and potato starch.

Compostable

Products converted into organic matter, the compost.

The word “compost” comes from the Latin word “compositus” and the verb “componere”. Around the end of the 14th century the word “composte” appeared in the French language, which meant mixture of leaves, manure and other materials in order to fertilize fields. The modern word “compost” appears for the first time in 1580 in England.

Compost is a natural fertilizer that is produced by the decomposition of organic matter such as leaves, branches, food leftovers (fruits, vegetables etc.). When it is of good quality, it can be used for all sorts of crops. The process of creating compost is called composting.

Composting is basically an enhanced biodegradation that takes place under controlled conditions. Bacteria, fungi and other microbes are the factors of decomposition. However, they are assisted by many other larger organisms. During composting those microbes produce CO2, heat and water, as they decompose the organic matter. The end product is a fertilizer (compost), which contains valuable and nutritious ingredients and can upgrade the quality of the crops. In other words, this is the difference between composting and biodegradation, since composting produces compost (fertilizer), while during biodegradation the product simply decomposes to CO2, water and biomass.

TESSERA Bio Products® are compostable according to the European Norm EN 13432, so trust them, use them and utilize them for composting!
